May is around the corner and for those of you who like to be kept in the know and are open to trying new things, we have compiled a list of some of our favourite events taking place in and around the Mother City this May. Read on to find out more. 1 May - Woodstock Beer FestThe Woodstock Autumn Beer Festival 2016 will be held at The Palms Décor and Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock on Sunday the 1st of May. Last year’s inaugural winter version was hugely successful and this year's event is sure to be just as good. Monday the 2nd is a public holiday, so no excuses not to attend because it's on a Sunday ;) Tickets cost R40 online and R60 at the door. Visit their Facebook page for more info. 4 May - Guided Mushroom ForageJoin avid mushroom hunter Justin Williams as he guides you into the forest to learn all about the magical world of mushrooms! Justin and attendees will be meeting early and begin the foray with an educational talk about wild mushrooms, then head off into the forest to find what is on offer. Participants will need to bring a basket, pocket/pen knife, rain coat (weather permitting) and outdoor-friendly shoes. Cost: R350. Included: Notes, recipes, post-forage refreshments of nourinshing mushroom soup, bread, mushroom pate and a warming buchu brandy and rooibos hot toddie prepared by wild food forager Roushanna Gray. The Applewood Harvest Festival is a day of adventure, apple-themed activities and the best of Elgin’s gourmet artisanal and farm-grown produce. Expect fine fare from local restaurants and the best of craft cider and Elgin wines. Master an apple tasting, buy apple pies and apples by the bag and let the kids roam free. Lots of entertainment; from live music and tractor rides, to hay-diving, scarecrow building and apple hunting as well as beautiful goodies from local makers. Fresh air fitness enthusiasts can also look forward to a trail run. Visit their website for more info. 7 & 8 May - Riebeek Valley Olive FestivalThe annual Riebeek Valley Olive Festival takes place over the weekend of 7 and 8 May (9:30am to 5pm Saturday; 9:30am to 4pm Sunday), and you’re sure to find everything olive related – perfect for the olive enthusiast! From olives to olive oils and olive inspired produce this promises to be a feast for the senses. Sample a wide range of olives from local South African Olive producers. Not forgetting the superb local wines. The perfect excuse to stock up! Artisanal beers, an abundance of hearty local food and live entertainment are the perfect ingredients to what promises to be an unforgettable weekend. An Olive Passport, valid for the entire weekend, will give you access to the participating wine farms. Cost: R125 per person and includes a complimentary tasting glass. Visit their website for more details. 8 May - Mother's Day lunch at Eight - SpierChef Charl Coetzee will be combining his creative flair with wholesome ingredients to create a mouthwatering buffet: think trout mousse and salads bursting with flavour to start with, followed by hearty classics like pork belly, lamb chops and sustainably caught fish, rounded off by an exquisite dessert. Email for bookings. 15 May - FNB Cape Town 12 OneRunThe FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN, arguably the most passionate and welcoming road race on the South African running calendar is back on the streets of Cape Town this May. It celebrates everything Cape Town – the vibrant culture, the city, and the people. This fast, flat 12km event brings together runners from all walks of life to experience a run built for fun. It starts in Milnerton and follows the coastline past key landmarks, finishing at the FNB Portside building in the heart of the CBD. Entree fees cost R120, visit their website here to enter. 20 May - The Tasting WorkshopThe Tasting Workshop brings you a whisky and canapé food pairing taste sensation. This particular event is focused on combining the 6 different flavours of the Bunnahabhain and Scottish Leader whisky range with a well-paired canapé per whisky. The event will be lead by none other than Pierre Meintjes ('Mr Whisky' SA). The event will be a sit down banquette setting, with music and a cash bar. Tickets: Visit their Facebook page to purchase tickets and for more details. 21 May - High Tea Festival - KirstenboschSouth Africa's first Annual High Tea Festival Series, an event like this has never been held in South Africa before, this festival will highlight and showcase teas of the world, tea sets, food, jewellery and everything opulent associated with a High Tea. Everyone loves a little indulgence and South Africa`s first Annual High Tea Festival Series is the perfect way to enjoy a grand tradition with a modern twist. Allow the Tea Princess to add a touch and taste of royalty to your afternoon. Sip on champagne while tasting teas of the world, enjoying caviar and tantalising food all in a beautiful, stunning environment. There are fabulous prizes to be won on the day, including teasets, beautiful diamond and pearl jewellery and much more. The grand prize is two tickets to Thailand in the lucky draw competition that will be held. Tickets cost R300 per person and can be purchased here. 27 - 29 May - Good Food and Wine Show - CTICCCape Town has recently just been voted the "Best Foodie City in the World" by Condé Nast Traveler. If you'd like to taste and sample some of the city's most infamous chefs and their mouth-watering dishes, be sure to attend the ever popular Cape Town Good Food and Wine Show taking place at the CTICC from the 27th to 29th May 2016. Tickets will be available on Computicket soon. Time: 10h00 - 21h00 28 May - Shiraz and Charcuterie - Anthonij Rupert EstateShiraz and Charcuterie; a culinary match made in heaven. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience this well-matched pair at this year’s Shiraz & Charcuterie at Anthonij Rupert Wyne in Franschhoek on Saturday, 28 May.
The perfect excuse to sample some of Anthony Rupert's award winning Shiraz wines, paired with mouth-watering charcuterie and other delicious artisanal fare.
